In early 2020, recognizing an urgent need for innovative approaches and resources to reach and engage adolescents affected by the global COVID-19 pandemic, UNICEF developed an adapted version of the Adolescent Kit for Expression and Innovation. The Adolescent Kit Adapted Resource Package for COVID-19 (Adapted Resource Package) offers activities that adolescents can self-administer wherever they are, to promote their own psychosocial wellbeing and learn new skills during times of stress, isolation and interruptions in their formal education. Additionally, the package includes instructions for programme coordinators and facilitators to reach adolescents remotely through platforms such as radio or mobile device, and/or by distributing activity guides directly to adolescents, and for parents and caregivers to support adolescents as they engage in the activities at home or in their shelters. The Adapted Package is also available on UNICEF’s Core Commitments for Children website, with other programme resources developed for response to the COVID-19 crisis.
UNICEF strongly encourages face-to-face programmes and interventions, such as those supported by the original Adolescent Kit, whenever adolescents can safely gather with peers and facilitators, so they may best enjoy the opportunities to connect and collaborate on activities and projects together. However, the Adapted Resource Package offers practical materials that programme coordinators and facilitators can use for temporary remote programmes when stay-at-home orders for safety or protection are in place, and/or for use together with the original Adolescent Kit materials to create hybrid programmes.
Learn more by reading this Adapted Resource Package Introduction, which includes steps and tips to plan and support remote programmes and interventions for adolescents under stay-at-home orders. The guides linked below are also recommended for anyone planning, managing or supporting programmes and interventions for adolescents using the Adapted Resource Package.
At the heart of the Adapted Resource Package are twelve Activity Guides, designed for adolescents to self-administer, and ready to disseminate to adolescents in hard copy and/or via mobile device. These twelve Activity Guides are adapted from activities in the original Adolescent Kit, and can also be found on the main Activity Box page of this website. Like all activities in the Adolescent Kit, they correspond with the Activity Phases, and address the Ten Key Competencies.
Additionally, the Adapted Resource Package includes Energizers that encourage adolescents to relax and enjoy creative entertainment together or alone, and Inspiration Cards, which are fun, practical and quick activities to keep adolescents inspired and motivated.
